Warrington

Warrington changed from the factory town born out of the Industrial Revolution into a modern centre for high technology industry. The town became an important staging post on the road from north to south and rapidly grew into an important trading centre. Gradually it became the centre of many industries. In recent years Warrington was granted "New Town" status which led to a rapid planned expansion of the town, many new homes, jobs and industrial and commercial growth. Warrington has excellent shopping facilities, including its own indoor market. The Town Hall was designed by James Gibbs and built in 1750. The interesting attraction is the gate to the Sankey Street frontage to the Town Hall. The gates are said to be amongst the finest in England.
