Sunderland

Sunderland, the city by the sea, has the longest beach and the largest green belt area within its boundaries of any city in England, and boasts not just one but two renowned beaches within easy reach of the city centre. One of our most dramatic man-made spectacles has to be Penshaw Monument. Designed in 1844 in the form of a Greek temple, it was built in honour of John George Lambton, the First Earl of Durham. A short cycle or drive will take you to one of the North's oldest monuments, Hadrian's Wall, and one of its newest, the famous Angel of the North.
