Stockton on Tees

The River Tees was vital to the early industrial development of Stockton on Tees, Cleveland, that in the 1700s became a major river port. The major tourist attraction is a full size replica of James Cook's ship HM Bark Endeavour moored at Castlegate Quay on Stockton's riverside. Guided tours around the ship reveal a fascinating insight into how Captain Cook and his crew lived. Another attraction is the Preston Hall Museum, the impressive mansion of local shipbuilder Robert Ropner. In this popular museum you'll find displays about family life from the late 1800's, collections of armoury, toy gallery and the famous painting of Georges de la Tour.
