Southend-on-Sea is a traditional family seaside resort with seven miles of seafront,
award-winning beaches,
magnificent parks and gardens, and
the world's largest 100-year-old pier at the mouth of the River Thames.
It was made a popular tourist town in the early 19th century
by Princess Caroline of Brunswick.
It is also the closest seaside resort to London.
Among the various attractions there is Adventure Island,
the largest theme park in the South East, with more than 40 rides and attractions.
Further up the coast there is the Kursaal entertainment complex.
Europe's largest free air show also takes place along the seafront
every May Bank Holiday.
Other attractions include an excellent shopping centre, four museums, the Palace Theatre,
the Cliffs Pavilion and seven sailing and yachting clubs.
