Once surrounded by sea, this fortified hilltop town of Rye played an important role in the defence of the south coast of England.
It has altered little through the ages boasting its handsome Georgian buildings and half timbered Tudor houses.
The attraction of Rye is Ypres Tower, one of the oldest buildings in Rye,
that survived the burning of the town by the French at the end of the XIVth century.
It was built as part of the town's defences, later becoming a private dwelling, then a prison, and subsequently a mortuary prior to being used as a museum.
On display in the Tower there are medieval pottery, ironwork, smuggling and law enforcement items.
There is also a model of the changes in the coastline. From the terrace you will enjoy a view of what once was a great harbour.
