Nottingham, the county town of Nottinghamshire, on the River Trent,
is the principle city in the East Midlands.
It is famous as the setting for the 'Robin Hood' legend.
The Nottingham Castle, standing on Castle Rock,
inhabited by the Sheriff of Nottingham was destroyed by fire in the Middle Ages
and largely rebuilt about two centuries ago
but part of the medieval walls and many subterranean passages remain.
There is still a Sheriff of Nottingham, although this is now a civic office.
The Castle is now a museum.
Another Nottingham attraction, the 'Trip To Jerusalem' Inn is the oldest pub in England,
dating from 1189 AD.
It is so named because it was visited by the knights on their way to the crusades in the Holy Land.
Many of the interior rooms of the inn are caves carved from the rock.
