Malmesbury

Malmesbury is in the north-west of the county of Wiltshire. It is about 95 miles west of London and 30 miles north-east of Bristol. Malmesbury is one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in Britain. The first Christian community was established in the mid-7th century, and the Abbey, which dominates the centre of the town, dates from about 1180. The Abby and attractive gardens are open to visitors. To celebrate the last two and a half thousand years of Malmesbury history, nine bronze plaques have been cast and put in place on the steps leading up from the river to the Abbey. The Athelstan Museum is worth a visit. This small but attractive museum is located within the Town Hall in Cross Hayes. It gives a fine picture of the life of the town over the centuries.
