Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands and the tenth largest in the country. Its importance was first recognised by the Romans and later by the Danes, who used it as a strategic stronghold to control the Midlands. Since then it has developed into a major commercial and manufacturing centre. You should visit the National Space Centre that is the UK's largest attraction dedicated to Space Science and astronomy. Another tourist attraction is the New Walk Museum. Dinosaur skeletons, Egyptian mummies and German Expressionist paintings are among the exhibits on display. Belvoir Castle, built during the Regency period, is open to visitors. The castle houses many treasures collected throughout the ages and boasts one of the largest private art collections. The town also offers a great choice of shops.
