Lancaster

The historic city of Lancaster was originally a Roman settlement, Lun-Castrum, the fort on the River Lune. The magnificent Medieval Castle offers guided tours. You can see where the Lancashire witches were tried, convicted and condemned to death and also the shire hall with its display if heraldic shields and the dungeons. Other attractions are the City Museum located in the Georgian Old Town Hall and the Maritime Museum on the quayside. The eastern skyline is dominated by the Ashton Memorial set in the beautiful Williamson Park where you can see a Butterfly House, tropical birds and "mini beasts". Shopping in Lancaster's traffic free centre is easy and relaxing with attractive shopping centres, the new market hall and the Assembly Rooms with stalls selling curios and collectibles. In the nearby streets there is a wealth of shops, pubs and cafes.
