Situated on the Kilmarnock Water and the River Irvine 19 km north east of Ayr in East Ayrshire, the town of Kilmarnock is thought to have been established in the 7th Century by the Irish missionary Mernoc.
The busy industrial town with good communication links to all parts of the country has a shopping and recreation centre, numerous parks and indoor swimming pool.
Tourist attractions include the Burns monument (1879) in Kay Park, the Dick Institute, a museum and art gallery, with a set of Scottish broadswords, Dean Castle with a collection of arms, armour and instruments and its large country park; and the Laigh Park (1410).
