Falmouth, Cornwall, is a pretty bustling friendly town surrounded by a beautiful coastline with many creeks and inlets to explore. It was built on a superb natural harbour. In Tudor times the Fal River was busy and important port, and Henry the VIII had the magnificent Pendennis castle built there. The castle, situated on the tip of the promontory, is the largest fort in Cornwall and well worth a visit.
Falmouth developed in the 17th and 18th centuries as a port connecting England to the East Indies and Spain. Nowadays, though Falmouth is still an important ship repair centre, the town mostly depends on tourism. Falmouth's town centre is busy with craft shops and fish merchants and has lovely restaurants and pubs. The region boasts lovely sandy beaches.
