Doncaster

Doncaster owes its importance to its position on the great North Road. It was a major coaching centre in the 18th century. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries it was primarily an inland leisure town based on the world famous race course. Modern Doncaster is a mix of the traditional, old and new. It boasts a fine selection of shops that suit every taste and pocket - from department stores to designer shops. In addition, the Frenchgate Centre provides quality shopping all under one roof. Doncaster has plenty of pubs, a number of night-clubs, and a couple of companies which run river cruises combining a night-club atmosphere with a life afloat. You should visit the Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery in the town centre. It runs regular exhibitions and houses a number of important regional collections. The museum, opened in 1964, also has an extensive natural history collection.
