Carlisle is the only city in Cumbria, and is the centre for shopping, entertainment and the arts.

Shopping is excellent in Carlisle, as the whole of the centre of the town is pedestrianised.

The Carlisle Castle, that bore the brunt of the frequent Scots attacks on the city, is the largest castle in Cumbria, and also one of the best preserved.
