Basingstoke

Basingstoke is now a modern town, but it owes its early prosperity to the wool trade during the Middle Ages. The town is located in north Hampshire, in an area known as The Hampshire Borders, which historically was an ancient forest used as a royal hunting ground. The area is also famous for the hiding place of Dick Turpin, England's most notorious highwayman. Basingstoke provides excellent leisure opportunities, mainly at the Sports Centre in the middle of town and at the Leisure Park to the west of town. The local attractions include the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum, now known as Silchester, with the best examples of a surviving Roman town wall, Highclere Castle, Milestones - the Hampshire's Living History Museum, and Stratfield Saye House displaying paintings and furniture.
