Basildon

Among the newest towns in Essex is Basildon. Until the railway arrived in the 19th century Basildon was a small rural village, whose cottages clustered around the 14th century Holy Cross Church. In 1949 it became a new town. Basildon boasts several country parks and nature reserves including 250 acre Gloucester Park which offers fishing, bowls, netball, American football and novelty golf. Basildon has numerous leisure attractions including the Eastgate indoor shopping centre, traditional high streets, multiscreen cinema and Festival Leisure Park which provides 35 acres of music, entertainment, pubs, restaurants, sports facilities and a 10 screen cinema. In the heart of the town is the 85ft St. Martin's 'Bell Tower', the World's first to be made of glass and steel.
